I love this gate. I wish it was the door to my photographic studio. Behind the thick iron gate there’s an old ex-industrial storehouse, a barrel vault made in grey bricks that look like the ones used by the Romans. There were a lot of these former storehouses in this street, because originally here is where he city harbor was located on the Tiber River. Eventually most of the storehouses fell down over the years, and now this is the street where the main part of the flea market of Porta Portese is hold.
Yet there are quite a few of them still in good shape. I really wish I could be in the position to rent, or even buy, one of these and put my studio in it, there’s such a great atmosphere inside…
That said, the 4:20 is a pub, a rather good one, impressive selection of beers, one of the few places in Rome where you can drink till four in morning on Fridays and Saturdays. The owners go really Taliban about hop, they serve only drinks which derive from it, so basically they serve solely beer and whiskey (no coke, sodas, or any other alcoholic beverage is served here). And they also put hop, beer or whiskey in all the meals they cook, even in their burgers. I never ate here (yet), so I can’t confirm how good (or bad) the food is, but the beer is most certainly excellent. And it is at just twenty meters from my flat.
Lovin’ the sign to that place, don’t want to speak to soon, but I’ve started the planning stages of our return to Italy for a short visit, so hopefully will have a chance to sample their brews sooner then later!
